Former Minneapolis Officer Derek Chauvin was sentenced to 22 and half years in the murder of George Floyd
June 25, 2021
MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (AGN.News) – Former Minneapolis Officer Derek Chauvin murder trial began on March 8, 2021, in the Minnesota Fourth Judicial District Court, and concluded on April 20 when the jury found him guilty on all three charges. Today, Derek Chauvin was sentenced to 22 and a half years in the murder of George Floyd.
Now, three months after his conviction, Derek Chauvin knows what the whole world has been waiting for, his fate. Mr Chauvin is to spend 22 and a half years in prison for the second-degree murder.
What happened to George Floyd?
Derek Chauvin was found guilty in the May 25, 2020 murder of George Floyd on all counts on April 20, 2021. Derek Chauvin was charged with second-degree murder (sentenced to 270 months), third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter under Minnesota law. Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill set June 25, 2021 for sentencing.
As a 19 year veteran police officer, Chauvin held his knee on the neck of handcuffed behind his back – George Floyd for 9 minutes and 29 seconds. Bystanders, including children, kept shouting for Chauvin to “let him breathe” to no avail. A 9 year old girl said, “We need to call the police on the police”.
George Floyd repeatedly shouted, “I can’t breathe” over again, “I can’t breathe” to no avail. A Minneapolis EMT, trained to save lives, shouted “Let me check his pulse”. Chauvin pulled out his pepper spray and threatened to spray her if she did not step back – was an “aggravating factor”.
Mr Chauvin and three other Minneapolis police officers worked in concert to deny George Floyd the care due him after taking him into custody – was an “aggravating factor”.
Rather, they denied Mr Floyd all care that could have saved his life, according to the prosecution. Especially egregious is the fact there were children present who, have struggled to process what they witnessed in broad daylight, on a city street, at the hands of in-uniform police officers – was an “aggravating factor”.
All of these acts were called egregious, by the prosecution, aggravating factors that should lead to a maximum sentence. The prosecution called for the maximum time of 360 months (30 years) in the Department of Corrections.
Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill after hearing victim impact statements, prosecution statement, and defense statements, sentenced former Minneapolis Officer Derek Chauvin to 22 and a half years (270 months) in the murder of George Floyd.
His sentencing may somewhat close the state’s case for Mr Chauvin, but his three co-defendants are to go on trial next year in March on charges of aiding and abetting the second degree murder of George Floyd.
More legal exposure came in May 2021 for all four former police officers when a federal grand jury indicted them on charges they violated the civil rights of George Floyd after they placed him under arrest.
Their trial in Federal Court is scheduled to take place later this year.
