December 24, 2019

SPRINGFIELD, Ill – With January 1st getting ever closer, thousands of 21 and over Illinois residents are preparing for the opportunity to buy and/or smoke recreational marijuana.

Residents will be able to legally buy up to 30 grams of marijuana flower, 5 grams of marijuana concentrate, or 500 grams of THC-infused products such as edibles at licensed commercial dealers throughout the state.

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker signed the law which makes it legal in the state. Medical Marijuana has been legal since 2014. The new law is expected to generate $57 million in taxes and fees in fiscal 2020 [beginning July 1, 2020] as a result of the legal marijuana sales according to Illinois state revenue department.

There are some restrictions included. Private sales and driving under the influence of marijuana or related products remain violations with criminal charges the probable result.

Not everyone is looking for the new law to start on January 1st. Many residents, law enforcement and medical professionals are quietly expressing reservations as well as a wait and see attitude.
