UVALDE, TEXAS (AGN.News) – The United States continues to experience mass shootings and killings of the innocent. Two weeks ago in Buffalo, New York, an 18 year old white supremacist lone gunman traveled over 200 miles to the Tops Friendly Market and killed 10 Black shoppers. Another Black person and two white people were wounded.
Uvalde, Texas is a small community of 16,000 mostly Hispanic residents with a long history of unity and support for family and friends. Uvalde is described as a very tight-knit community where everybody knows everybody.
This week in Uvalde, Texas, located 80 miles west of downtown San Antonio and 54 miles east of the Mexico–United States border, experienced the same mass shooting.
This week, two days before the end of the 2021-2022 school year, on Tuesday, May 24, 2022, 19 children and two adult teachers were killed in a school shooting at Robb Elementary School.
Awards were just handed out to many of the students. The students were celebrating the coming of summer vacation and the end of the school year in just 2 days when tragedy struck the campus.
An 18 year old local Uvalde gunman, Salvador Ramos, unleashed a mind-numbing barrage of bullets on 3rd and 4th grade students and teachers at the school while they were in their classroom. Another 17 people were wounded, including three law enforcement officers.
The gunman, Salvador Ramos, allegedly purchased two assault rifles just days after turning 18 and used them to carry out the second-worst school shooting in U.S. history to date, killing 21 people, according to authorities. He used one assault rifle to shoot his own grandmother in the face prior to going into the school.
Adding grief upon grief, one of the teachers who were killed at the school was married to her school age friend with whom she had four children. He died from a medical condition on Thursday morning, May 26, 2022.
As more details come to light, the whole Uvalde community is experiencing grief and sadness at an unprecedented level – as they mourn the dead and wounded adults and children.
The world community and local residents, though grieving, have come together with shared love and respect, kindness, goodness, messages of support, condolences and community support for one another, including schools officials, law enforcement agencies, community groups, church leaders, NGOs, and many other groups and organizations, so the City of Uvalde healing process can begin.
President Joe Biden and First Lady, Dr. Jill Biden, are scheduled to arrive in Uvalde for a meeting with the victim’s families and government officials on Sunday, May 29, 2022 to “grieve with the community”.
