Uvalde Shooting: The tragedy that would unite a nation and “secure the blessings of liberty” for their children’s children

UVALDE, TEXAS (AGN.News) – The Founding Fathers of the United States knew the value of unity and its role in unifying the new nation. They also knew that the nation would be tested from time to time.
As a nation of immigrants from Europe and beyond, with different views on governance and government, the new nation would have to unify in order to preserve its role as a model of democracy.
Uvalde, Texas, a small southwest Texas community of 16,000 residents, 80 miles west of San Antonio, would become the latest in a long line of tests to confront unity verses division – strength verses weakness. On May 24, 2022, an 18 year old Uvalde resident attacked a school with weapons of war – killing 19 students and two teachers and wounding 17 others, including three law enforcement officers.
The residents of Uvalde immediately united in body and mind to confront this evil that came to their community. They turned to their intestinal strength and belief in God. Their faith in God would carry them through – this journey into the unknown.
As many parents, when interviewed, said “faith will carry us through”. These parents knew that they were part of the “We the People” that would unite them with their fellow citizens across this great land. The protections guaranteed in the US Constitution would help secure a lasting future for their children.
They understood the scope of the United States Constitution is twofold. First, “to form a more perfect Union” than had previously existed in the “perpetual Union” of the Articles of Confederation. Second, to “secure the blessings of liberty”, which were to be enjoyed by not only the first generation but for all who came after, “our posterity”.
As in the past, they will reflect on these facts. They would come to expect the safety and protections of this great nation and its citizens guaranteed them and their children in the Constitution.
Many parents want the country to change for the better. A country where there is a “all for one and one for all” approach as a united country. To these parents, its all about their confidence in a safe and secure future for their children as free and brave citizens who would one day have their own children.
The 2021 National League Manager of the Year, San Francisco Giants manager Gabe Kapler said he will not come out for the national anthem before games “until I feel better about the direction of our country”.
He said he was acting after the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde: “We didn’t stop to reflect on whether we are actually free and brave after this horrific event, we just stood at attention.
Kapler, like many Uvalde parents, want to see real change. They want their children to leave home, go to school, learn the lessons of the day and return home safely without experiencing the “horrors of war” in their community. Many, like Kapler said, “I am not OK with the state of this country”.
Since “all men are created equal” in the eyes of God and man, all these parents want for their families is for their children to grow up and be part of a “more perfect union” like the Founding Fathers envisioned.
The tragedy of the Uvalde mass shooting, it is hoped, would unite a nation with renewed determination to protect its most vulnerable and to live up to its creed to “secure the blessings of liberty”, which would be enjoyed by not only them but for all their children’s children who would come after them, “our posterity”.
