WASHINGTON (AGN.News) – TIME Magazine has announced its “Person of the Year”. “The Person of the Year” is the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky and “the spirit of Ukraine”.
Every year TIME Magazine features a “Person of the Year” on the cover of its December issue. TIME published its first issue on March 3, 1923, 99 years ago. TIME started the annual tradition of “Man of the Year” (now Person of the Year) in 1927.
TIME’s most famous feature throughout its history has been the annual “Person of the Year” (formerly “Man of the Year”) cover story, in which TIME recognizes the individual or group of individuals who have had the biggest impact on news headlines over the past 12 months.
Who is Volodymyr Zelensky?
Volodymyr Zelensky is the current President of Ukraine since 2019. Born to a Ukrainian Jewish family, Zelenskyy grew up as a native Russian speaker in Kryvyi Rih, a major city of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast in central Ukraine. He obtained a law degree from the Kyiv National Economic University.
Zelensky won the election with 73.23 percent of the vote in the second round, defeating the then-President Poroshenko. As President, he and his administration, oversaw the lifting of legal immunity for members of parliament (the Verkhovna Rada), the country’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent economic recession.
On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion Ukraine. Zelenskyy declared martial law across Ukraine and a general mobilization of the armed forces. The Ukrainian armed forces have exacted a heavy toll on the invaders as they took back hundreds of square kilometers (miles) of Ukrainian soil.
Zelenskyy’s leadership during this on-going crisis has won him widespread international praise, and he has been described as an example and symbol of the Ukrainian resistance.
Being awarded as TIME’s Person of the Year for 2022, the international community and social polls have ranked Zelenskyy as Ukraine’s greatest president of all time.
TIME recognizes Zelenskyy’s leadership
The magazine’s editor, Edward Felsenthal, said the decision was “the most clear-cut in memory”.
“In a world that had come to be defined by its divisiveness, there was a coming together around this cause, around this country,” Edward Felsenthal wrote.
Felsenthal also recognizes and awards the “spirit of Ukraine”, referencing the Ukrainian people around the world.
The international community recognizes President Zelenskyy as an inspiration for all Ukrainians and as an example in courage for standing up to and resisting the Russian invasion.
TIME said, “Zelensky’s success as a wartime leader has relied on the fact that courage is contagious.”
