WASHINGTON (AGN.News) – Today, the White House announced the location of the upcoming 2022 United States–Africa Leaders Summit. It will be held in Washington, D.C. on next Tuesday through Thursday, December 13-15, 2022.
The U.S.- Africa Leaders Summit was first held in Washington D.C. from August 4–6, 2014. This is an international summit of African sovereign nations.
Today, the Summit announcement was made by national security council spokesperson John Kirby.
President Joe Biden will attend the summit and will make a long overdue announcement. He will call for the African Union to get a permanent seat as part of the Group of 20 (G-20), which would give African nations a seat at the table on key economic matters and diversify the organization of major economies.
What is the African Union?
The African Union (AU) is a continental union consisting of 55 member states located on the continent of Africa. The AU’s motto is: “A United and Strong Africa”.
On May 26, 2001, the African Union was founded in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and launched on July 9, 2002 in Durban, South Africa. There are 55 member states.
Key Facts about The African Union
The African Union Commission called The Secretariat and is based in Addis Ababa. The largest city in the AU is Lagos, Nigeria, while the largest urban agglomeration is Cairo, Egypt.
The African Union has more than 1.3 billion people and an continental area of around 29 million km2 (11 million sq mi) and includes popular world landmarks, such as the Sahara, the Nile River, and the Giza pyramid complex and the ancient cities of Memphis and Heliopolis.
The primary working languages are Arabic, English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, and Swahili. Within the African Union, there are official bodies, such as the Peace and Security Council and the Pan-African Parliament.
Reasons for AU inclusion in G-20
John Kirby said, “We need more African voices in international conversations,” adding, “The inclusion of the African Union would allow the continent to be better represented on matters of the economy, climate, health policy and national security.”
With more than 1.3 billion people out of 8.5 billion people on Earth, having AU representation will allow the voices of the continent to support universal solutions to global problems.
A strategic move for Biden!
President Biden is looking ahead to secure more support to expand the United Nations Security Council, and it comes as the administration more broadly hopes to rally allies in the fight against Russia’s invasion of Ukrainian lands, as well as China’s influence around the globe.
“African nations should have more opportunities to present their insights and propose solutions on global challenges that impact them – from climate change to food security to public health,” Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), chairman of the Subcommittee on Africa and Global Healthy Policy, wrote in a statement on Friday.
US and ALS: A valuable summit!
African nations will see the value of aligning with the United States as partners in tackling global issues that ultimately affects the continent.
Together, the United States along with the leaders of African nations, which have existed for thousands of years, can unite in a common purpose with a global commitment to mutual security and future economic development.
