LONDON (AGN.News) – Hundreds of millions the world over are mourning the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022). In London, hundreds of thousands have waited over 24 hours to pay tribute to her in-person at Westminster Hall.
The Queen’s grandchildren coffin vigil
On Saturday, Queen Elizabeth’s eight grandchildren, including Prince William, the Prince of Wales and Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, have stood vigil around the Queen’s coffin as she’s laying-in-state at Westminster Hall.
King Charles III’s request was for his son Prince Harry to wear his military uniform to the historic coffin vigil. The Prince complied with the request. This was the first time since 2020 he wore his military uniform.
Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex
Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, is a member of the British royal family. He is the younger son of King Charles III and his first wife, Diana, Princess of Wales. He is fifth in the line of succession to the British throne.
Prince Harry underwent officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He was commissioned as a cornet into the Blues and Royals, serving temporarily with his brother William and completed training as a troop leader.
In 2007–2008, he served for over ten weeks in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. He returned to Afghanistan for a 20-week deployment in 2012–2013 with the Army Air Corps. In June 2015, he resigned from the army.
In October 2008, it was announced that Harry would follow his brother, father and uncle in learning to fly military helicopters. Harry attended the Defence Helicopter Flying School at RAF Shawbury, where he joined his brother.
Prince Charles presented him with his flying brevet (wings) on 7 May 2010 at a ceremony at the Army Air Corps Base (AAC), Middle Wallop. Harry was awarded his Apache Flying Badge on 14 April 2011. On 16 April 2011, it was announced that Harry had been promoted to captain.
Grandchildren Historic Coffin Vigil
This is the first time in history that the grandchildren of a monarch have taken part in the ceremony. This historic 15 minute coffin vigil by the Queen’s grandchildren shows the love and respect for the Queen is a shared love for the Royal family.
The King’s sons William and Harry were joined by Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall, the children of Princess Anne, as well as Prince Andrew’s daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, and Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn, who are Prince Edward’s children.
In silence and with their heads bowed, the eight cousins stood at different points around the coffin as crowds continued to file past.
Prince William stood at the head of the Queen’s coffin with his brother Prince Harry at the opposite end.
Royal family pays tribute
The BBC reports: On Friday evening, the Queen’s children, including the King, took part in a similar vigil, standing guard for about 10 minutes.
Ahead of the vigil, Beatrice and Eugenie paid tribute to their “dear Grannie”, saying: “It has been the honour of our lives to have been your granddaughters and we’re so very proud of you.”
