WASHINGTON D.C. (AGN.News) – On May 5, 2022, President Joe Biden has named Karine Jean-Pierre (44) as his new top spokesperson – the first time a Black, or openly gay, person has held the role. She is set to become the 35th White House Press Secretary on May 13, 2022, following the expected departure of Jen Psaki (43).
Ms Karine Jean-Pierre was born in Fort-de-France, Martinique to Haitian parents, and was raised in Queens Village, New York City, from age 5. She is a graduate of the New York Institute of Technology.
Jean-Pierre received her MPA from the School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University (SIPA) in 2003. In 2006, she was the outreach coordinator for Walmart Watch in Washington, D.C. She joined the Columbia University faculty in 2014.
Ms Jean-Pierre, 44, has served as the administration’s principal deputy press secretary since Mr Biden was elected. As Press Secretary, she will conduct daily news briefings with White House reporters, meaning the role can be high-profile.
Previously, Jean-Pierre was the senior advisor and national spokeswoman for MoveOn.org and a political analyst for NBC News and MSNBC. She is also a former lecturer in international and public affairs at Columbia University.
Jean-Pierre worked as a senior advisor to the Joe Biden 2020 presidential campaign. She joined the Biden team in May 2020, and explained to The Haitian Times that a desire to shape the future was especially motivating: When she was approached by the campaign, she looked at her daughter “and I thought to myself, ‘There is no way I can not get involved in this election.’”
In August 2020, it was announced that Jean-Pierre would serve as the Chief of Staff for Biden’s vice presidential nominee, who had not yet been announced.
On November 29, 2020, the Biden-Harris transition team announced that Jean-Pierre had been tapped to be the Principal Deputy Press Secretary.
On May 26, 2021, Jean-Pierre gave her first White House press briefing, becoming the first openly gay woman to do so and the first Black woman to do so since 1991.
On May 5, 2022 it was announced that she would be elevated to the role of White House Press Secretary as of May 13, 2022, succeeding Jen Psaki. Ms Psaki is taking up a job at MSNBC cable news outlet.
On Twitter, Ms Psaki called her successor, Jean-Pierre, a “remarkable woman” with “a moral core”. “I can’t wait to see her shine as she brings her own style, brilliance and grace to the podium,” Ms Psaki said.
