MEMPHIS (AGN.News) – On January 7, 2023, Tyre Nichols (June 5, 1993 – January 10, 2023), a FedEx employee, was stopped by Memphis police for reckless driving and other traffic violations. The city found no evidence to support the accounts given by the MPD officers who stopped him.
MPD Police Chief Cerelyn J. Davis later said the department had reviewed body-worn and other camera footage and could not find any evidence of probable cause for the traffic stop.
MPD officers charged for Nichols’ death
On January 8, 2023, five MPD officers who assaulted Tyre Nichols were discharged from MPD. On January 26, 2023, five officers were arrested and charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, official misconduct, and official oppression.
Four of the officers have pled not-guilty of the charges. Desmond Mills Jr., pled guilty to federal charges of deprivation of rights and conspiracy and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors on November 2, 2023.
The MPD has disciplined, relieved of duty, dismissed, or arrested thirteen officers in total regarding their conduct. Memphis Fire Services terminated three employees for their failure to evaluate or assist Tyre Nichols.
The five officers were also charged with federal crimes including civil rights violations. One later pled guilty to these charges. He later pled guilty to all state charges, including murder.
Protests for Nichols’ death by MPD
As the word spread about the death of Tyre Nichols nationwide and in other countries, crowds began to take to the streets in protest. Once the video of his murder was released by MPD on January 27th, street protests gathered steam nationwide.
It became clear that the story told by the officers and paramedics was not confirmed by the video of the events of January 7th. A MPD pole-mounted video camera captured the murder as it happened as well as the professional neglect by those sworn to render aid to victims of physical violence, namely, the MFS employees.
January 7th Vigil for Tyre Nichols
Today, a crowd gathered at the location where Tyre Nichols was murdered. His family and friends gathered to pay their respects. At locations across the country, other events were held to pay respects to the life and death of 29-year-old Tyre Nichols.
January 7th Vigil for Tyre Nichols
One year ago Tyre Nichols was simply driving home when the police stopped him, pulled him out of his car, tased him, pepper-sprayed him, beat him, kicked him, as he called out to his mother for help who was about a mile away waiting for her son to come home.
The police watched him from a distance as his life slipped away while they “invented” a story of Nichols attacking them.
On January 10, 2023, Tyre Nichols lost his life as a result of the MPD officers criminal acts. He was a very athletic individual who loved skateboarding and capturing images as an amateur photographer. His mother, RowVaughn Wells, spoke about missing her son who would always call her and update her on his activities. She had no idea he was being beat to death just up the street.
As tears and grief spread through the crowd it became evident that it would be a long time before the family and the public would begin to heal.
Justice for Tyre Nichols
Some relief came when the United States Department of Justice filed criminal charges against those involved. State and federal trials are still ahead. The family wants justice to prevail at trials.
In April 2023, Nichols’ mother, RowVaughn Wells, filed a $550 million lawsuit against the police department, the city, and the former officers.
On January 1, 2024, the city of Memphis has a new mayor, Paul Young. He has signaled his desire to implement new ordinances passed by the city council that hopefully will curb the type of abuses by the former city employees.
This is a developing story, so check back for updates.
