MEMPHIS (AGN.News) – On January 7, 2023, Tyre Nichols, a FedEx employee, was stopped by Memphis police for an apparent traffic violation. He died three days later.
He was beaten to near death by five police officers. Not one of them rendered medical assistance. Now, the Memphis Fire Department (MFD) fired three EMTs and MPD disciplined two more officers.
Who are the officers?
The five Black officers, all of whom joined the Memphis Police Department in the last six years, were fired last week after an investigation found them to be “directly responsible for the physical abuse of Mr Nichols”.
They are: Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Desmond Mills, Jr, Emmitt Martin III and Justin Smith. They were all arrested and charged with second-degree murder. They were all in custody, jail records show. They have since posted bond and released.
What happened to Tyre Nichols?
Tyre Nichols was pulled out of the car and ended up being attacked by MPD officers. Suddenly, he gets out from under several officers who were beating on him.
Officer Preston Hemphill, who is white, begins to chase Nichols down the road before turning back to return to the car at the initial traffic stop. Later in the video, Hemphill can be heard saying twice, “I hope they stomp his ass.”
MPD said Officer Preston Hemphill, 26, who is white, was relieved of his duties “when the other officers were relieved.” Memphis officials said they had suspended Preston Hemphill who was one of the police officers who initially stopped Mr Nichols for an alleged traffic violation.
Caught on SkyCop video camera
A video of Nichols being beaten is silent, taken from a SkyCop camera at Castlegate and Bear Creek Lane is about 30 minutes long. The camera swivels to show two officers violently pushing Nichols to the ground on his face as he tries to turn over.
Officers then repeatedly punched, kicked and hit Nichols with a baton. Then the MPD officers proceed to drag Nichols across the concrete to lean him against a police car. At this point, at least six officers are present.
The minutes stretch on as Nichols lies against the car, with more officers clustering around. At one point, Nichols appears to slump off of the car and lie fully on the ground. He rocks back and forth on the cement, with officers offering no aid.
It is not until 28 minutes into the video that a stretcher is brought for Nichols.
Late Monday afternoon, MPD announced that another officer, in addition to Hemphill, was relieved of their duties following the violent beating of Nichols — bringing the total number of disciplined officers to seven.
Officer’s report was not accurate!
Media reports indicate the official police report filed by the officers on the next day does not mention the attacks inflicted on Mr Nichols.
However, it does include a reference to Mr Nichols being aggressive and assaulting the officers with one officers making the claim of being a victim.
The report doesn’t match what was caught on video. In other words, the officers filed a false police report to justify the murder of Tyre Nichols.
EMTs fired for violating policy
EMTs Mr Robert Long and Mr JaMichael Sandridge responded to a call about a person being pepper-sprayed and arrived at 8:41 pm to find Mr Nichols handcuffed on the ground propped up against a police vehicle, officials said.
They requested an ambulance, according to the fire department. The ambulance was dispatched at 8:46 pm, arrived on the scene at 8:55 pm. Mr Nichols was admitted to hospital at 9:08 pm, according to the city of Memphis press release.
EMTs Robert Long and Mr JaMichael Sandridge, and Lieutenant Michelle Whitaker violated protocols by not immediately providing medical assistance to Mr Nichols.
The Memphis Fire Department announced Monday, January 30, 2023, that it had terminated two EMTs and a lieutenant for “violating numerous policies” in caring for Mr Tyre Nichols. Prosecutors are examining whether to bring charges against these employees.
“After concluding our internal investigation, it was determined that EMT-B Long, EMT-A Sandridge and Lt. Whitaker violated numerous MFD policies and protocols,” the statement read. “As a result, EMT-B Long, EMT-A Sandridge and Lt. Whitaker have been terminated from the Memphis Fire Department.”
