WASHINGTON (AGN.News) – For the first time in U.S. history U.S. banknotes will bear the signature of two women, 78th United States Secretary of the Treasury, Janet Louise Yellen (Janet Yellen) and the 45th Treasurer of the United States, Marilynn Roberge Malerba (Lynn Malerba).
Today, speaking at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing facility in Fort Worth, Texas, the Secretary of the Treasury, Janet Yellen said, “Women represent around 62% of the Treasury workforce, and women are in positions of power across our department.”
“Today is not about me or a new signature on our currency. It’s about our collective work to create a stronger and more inclusive economy,” Yellen added.
What makes these notes special?
Two new banknotes are being printed at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing facility. One is the $1 bill and the other is the $5 bill.
These notes are the first carrying the signature of a Native American woman — U.S. Treasurer Lynn Malerba. Ms Malerba is the 45th Treasurer of the United States.
Additionally, these notes are the first carrying the signature of another woman — U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, Janet Yellen. Ms Yellen is the 78th United States Secretary of the Treasury.
Malerba: Treasurer and Tribal Leader
Treasurer Lynn Malerba earned a Master of Public Administration from the University of Connecticut and a Doctor of Nursing Practice from Yale University.
Treasurer Marilynn Roberge Malerba is the first Native American to hold the position of Treasurer of the United States. She is also an American tribal leader who is the lifetime chief of the Mohegan Tribe. She also has a degree in nursing.
Malerba studied nursing at Hartford Hospital College of Nursing, and then earned a Bachelor of Science from St. Joseph’s College (now known as the University of Saint Joseph) in West Hartford, Connecticut, in 1983.
The Mohegan Tribe predates the U.S.
The Mohegan Tribe is a federally recognized tribe and sovereign tribal nation of the Mohegan people. Their reservation is the Mohegan Indian Reservation, located on the Thames River in Uncasville, Connecticut. Mohegan’s independence as a sovereign nation has been documented by treaties and laws for over 350 years.
