BELFAST, Northern Ireland – Today marks the 100 year anniversary of the creation of Northern Ireland.
Northern Ireland is officially a part of the United Kingdom. It’s often described as a country, province, territory or region. Going back to 3 May 1921, Northern Ireland became a country.
Today, 3 May 2021, Northern Ireland is officially 100 years old and is celebrating its 100 Year Anniversary!
What happened 100 years ago?
Government of Ireland Act 1920 was given royal assent and commenced on May 3 1921. Northern Ireland officially came into existence as the division of the island of Ireland became effective legally.
The border divided the 32-county island into two separate legal jurisdictions. Six counties in the north-east became Northern Ireland, which is still part of the United Kingdom.
The other 26-county territory became the Irish Free State which was renamed “Ireland” on 29 December 1937. This partition of Ireland had the effect of beginning the process of settling boundary issues between the nationalists (who wanted independence from British rule) and the unionists (who wanted to remain in the United Kingdom).
During the transition period Irish Free State setup border checkpoints separating the two countries. These checkpoints, according to historians, solidified the hard border line between Northern Ireland and Irish Free State.
Today, all of that is gone. The borders are open and the Republic of Ireland is the UK’s only land route into the European Union.
