WASHINGTON (AGN.News) – The national Hispanic community in the United States have made major contributions to the success of the lands and people that became the United States of America going back to at least the 16th century.
National Hispanic Heritage Month recognizes the many contributions, culture, and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and achievements for the United States.
Origin of National Hispanic Heritage Month
In 1968, Hispanic Week was introduced to America. A new U.S. law to establish Hispanic Week was sponsored by Rep. Edward R. Roybal (D-CA) from Los Angeles and signed into law by Democratic President Lyndon B. Johnson when Presidential Proclamation 3869 was declared.
In 1988, Hispanic Week was expanded to a month. This commemorative month would be celebrated from September 15th to October 15th every year.
In 1988, a special bill was introduced in Congress and sponsored by Democratic Rep. Esteban E. Torres from California and Democratic Senator Paul Simon of Illinois to create National Hispanic Heritage Month.
This bill, passed by Congress, was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan. National Hispanic Heritage Month was born!
Why begin September 15th?
The September 15th date was chosen because it is the anniversary of the Cry of Delores which began in the early morning of September 16, 1810. This marked the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence.
On September 21, 1821, the independence of the New Spain Colony (Mexico and the Central American nations of Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua which was called the Federal Republic of Central America) was complete.
