WASHINGTON (AGN.News) – Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first African American woman confirmed by the United States Senate to become the next Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
On April 7, 2022, Judge Jackson received Senate confirmation, with all fifty members of the Democratic caucus and three Republicans voting in favor of the nomination and 47 Republicans voting against.
Ketanji Jackson, born in Washington D.C., began her legal career with three clerkships, including one with U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Stephen Breyer.
Judge Jackson, who is currently a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, served as a district judge for the United States District Court for the District of Columbia from 2013 to 2021.
Judge Jackson was also vice chair of the United States Sentencing Commission from 2010 to 2014. Since 2016, she has been a member of the Harvard Board of Overseers.
On February 25, 2022, President Joe Biden nominated Jackson to be an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, filling the vacancy that is to be created by Breyer’s retirement. Upon being sworn in, Jackson will be the first Black woman to sit on the Supreme Court.
Ketanji Brown Jackson will be the first Black woman justice in the Supreme Court’s 232-year history. The federal judiciary was established for America on March 4, 1789 (233 years ago). The first Black female federal judge, the late Hon. Constance Baker Motley, was commissioned on August 30, 1966, 177 years later.
It has taken over 55 years since then for our country to nominate a Black woman to our highest court. All Americans should celebrate this quantum leap forward in our history. “We commend President Joe Biden for honoring his campaign promise to nominate a Black woman to the nation’s highest court.” – Local Attorney
Now all girls, Black girls, White girls, Asian girls, Latino girls and every girl of color can now say “I can do it! Her appointment is going to inspire everybody to follow their dreams, to know that everything is possible. The dream of a more perfect union is getting closer to becoming a reality.” – Local Attorney
Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson will receive her commission for a seat on the Supreme Court when Justice Stephen Breyer retires from the court sometime during this summer (2022). She will take her seat on the court when the 2022 fall session begins.
