WASHINGTON (AGN.News) – Independence Day in the United States is a celebration of national pride on July 4th. The first Independence Day was on July 4, 1776. The first annual celebration was on July 4, 1777. Independence Day has been celebrated every year since 1777.
The Continental Congress of the United States declared that the thirteen American colonies were no longer subject to the monarch of Britain, King George III, and were now united, free, and independent states. The Congress had voted to declare independence two days earlier, on July 2, but it was not declared until July 4, 1776.
What happens on the 4th of July?
First, it’s Independence Day. As such Americans celebrate with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, political speeches, and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States.
Secondly, the Founding Fathers of America set the example of celebrating for future generations. They continued to celebrate the 4th of July throughout their lives.
On July 4, 1777, thirteen (for the 13 original colonies) gunshots were fired in salute, once at morning and once again as evening fell in Bristol, Rhode Island.
Also, on July 4, 1777, there was a grand Independence Day celebration in Philadelphia. The Virginia Gazette issue on July 18, 1777 reported on an official dinner for the Continental Congress. The dinner included toasts, 13-gun salutes, speeches, prayers, music, parades, troop reviews, and fireworks. Ships in port were decked with red, white, and blue bunting.
In 1778, General George Washington, from his headquarters at Ross Hall, near New Brunswick, New Jersey, marked July 4th with a double ration of rum for his soldiers and an artillery salute.
In Paris, France, United states ambassadors John Adams and Benjamin Franklin held a dinner for their fellow Americans.
In 1781, the Massachusetts General Court became the first state legislature to recognize July 4th as a state celebration.
In 1783, the city of Salem, North Carolina, claims it to be the first public July 4 event in America. Salem held a musical celebration entitled The Psalm of Joy by Johann Friedrich Peter on the 4th of July. This event was carefully documented by the Moravian Church, and there are no government records of any earlier celebrations.
In 1870, the U.S. Congress made Independence Day an unpaid holiday for federal employees.
In 1938, the United States Congress made Independence Day a paid federal holiday.
In 2021, the tradition of the Founding Fathers will continue this Independence Day at the White House, Congress, as well as the Capital. Other public and private events as well as dinners and traditional religious ceremonies will be held in the District. Televised sporting events are a tradition on the 4th of July.
On July 4, 2021, Americans everywhere, of every background, ethnicity, religion, social status, community, city, state, and territory will celebrate.
Americans worldwide will celebrate with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, political speeches, and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events on the 4th July.
