ATLANTA (AGN.News) – United States opens the EV technology door of the future with tech jobs, electric automakers and electric truck production. This is Part I of IV articles on the future of EV technology.
Part I – The state of Georgia has taken the lead in the production of electric vehicles (EV) by encouraging Asian automakers to come to the state.
With the pollution-driven combustible engines using gas and diesel contributing to the production of pollution and greenhouse gases in the environment, the need for an alternative in the future of transportation has become a priority.
Many states and the federal government have stepped up to help meet this need, including the state of Georgia. Since 2006, Asian automakers have looked to Georgia as a desired location for new plants.
President Joe Biden will be traveling to Japan and South Korea from May 20-24 on missions focused on economic cooperation, the production of electric vehicles and creation of green jobs in the U.S. The President wants to electrify the federal fleet of cars and trucks.
Savannah, Georgia is the future home to another KIa electric vehicle manufacturing plant. In late May 2022, Hyundai Motor Group with its Kia brand is planning to announce a second factory in Georgia near Savannah to build electric vehicles. This plant will employ 8.500 workers. This announcement will be made in conjunction with President Biden’s Asian trip from May 20-24, 2022.
Commerce, Ellabell, Pembroke, Rutledge, Savannah and West Point are current and future homes to electric vehicles (EV). These Georgia communities are major contributors to the general boom among Asian car manufacturers.
Hyundai Motors has deep ties to Georgia. In 2006, Kia subsidiary announced its first U.S. plant in West Point. In 2006, West Point, Georgia became home to South Korean automaker, Kia. “We need to expand more in the global market in order to escape foreign exchange risks,” said Choi Soon-Chul, then executive vice president. This plant created over 2,500 jobs.
Commerce, Georgia is a city in Jackson County, 70 miles northeast of Atlanta. SK Innovation is building a $2.6 billion EV battery complex in Commerce.
Ellabell, Georgia, 7 miles east of Pembroke and 23 miles west of Savannah is a future site. Ellabell is an unincorporated community in Bryan County. The state of Georgia paid $61 million to purchase the undeveloped property in July 2021 as of May 2022 its home to Hyundai Motor Group.
Its being reported that this 2,284 acre site will be the home of a Hyundai Motor Group factory that will employ over 7,500 when all phases are complete. Gov. Brian Kemp’s office on Wednesday, May 17, 2022 alerted the local and national media to a “special economic development” announcement on Friday, May 19, 2022 at the Bryan County property.
Pembroke, Georgia (near Ellabell) is the future home to a Hyundai Motor Group electric vehicle and battery production plant. It’s negotiating for a 2,284-acre site along I-16 in Bryan County. The auto group is expected to build plug-in vehicles for its Hyundai and Kia brands, as well as batteries to power them.
This 2,284-acre Ellabell property along I-16 is an ideal location for EV production because of the flat terrain, free of rocky soil, and it enjoys direct connections by road and rail to the ports of Savannah and Brunswick.
Hyundai Motor has deep ties to Georgia. Kia announced its first U.S. plant in West Point in 2006. This will be Hyundai Motor Group’s second Georgia facility near Ellabell in Bryan County.
Rutledge, Georgia in the north central region of Georgia is home to the future Rivian plant. In December 2021, Gov. Brian Kemp and Rivian formally announced plans for a $5 billion electric vehicle plant on a site in southern Walton and Morgan counties.
Rivian plans a $5 billion electric vehicle (EV) and battery factory along I-20 between Social Circle and Rutledge where it will employ 7,500. Rivian has said it hopes to begin production of batteries and its electric trucks, SUVs and delivery vans in 2024 near the town of Rutledge.
Georgia and many other states along with the federal government are doing their part to advance the production of electric cars, trucks and batteries. Our next part will introduce “green” efforts to reduce greenhouse gases.
In addition to electric vehicle production plants, the added benefits for communities are local jobs. These plants will require electric power, food services, healthcare facilities, construction teams, construction materials, uniforms, furniture, IT services and much more. There is an estimated 50,000 good paying jobs generated from these facilities by 2026.
