MINNEAPOLIS – The jury received instructions from Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill as to how to proceed with deliberations of the guilt or innocence of Derek Chauvin in the murder of George Floyd on Memorial Day, May 25, 2020 in front of a local grocery store.
Derek Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter under Minnesota law, in the death of George Floyd. How long the sequestered jury will take is unknown. What is known is that there must be a unanimous decision among the 12 jurors.
Prosecutors wrapped up their closing statements, after the jury heard from 44 witnesses in 14 days, by urging the jury to consider the facts of the case, including the nine minutes and 29 seconds Derek Chauvin pressed his knee on George Floyd’s neck and return a guilty verdict. The Defense said that the drugs in George Floyd’s system is what most likely caused or contributed to his death in an effort to find his client not guilty by the jury.
The entire proceedings were televised around the world on every media that could carry the signal, including local television stations throughout North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Australia. Millions watched the trial online with cellphones and laptops. Many news reports stated this is one of the most watched trials in the history of television.
Late this afternoon the jury began the work of deciding what Derek Chauvin’s future would be. Millions worldwide are waiting to see what their decision would be, guilty or innocent of some, all, or none of the charges.
Now America and the world awaits a nail-biting verdict. “There is so much at stake,” said one viewer who watched every day of the murder trial.
