Former Minneapolis Officer Derek Chauvin has been sentenced to more than 20 years in prison for violating George Floyd’s civil rights

MINNEAPOLIS (AGN.News) – Derek Chauvin has been sentenced to more than 20 years in prison for violating George Floyd’s civil rights. Chauvin, 46, pleaded guilty to the separate federal civil rights charges in December 2021.
Derek Chauvin was found guilty in the May 25, 2020 murder of George Floyd on all counts on April 20, 2021. Derek Chauvin was charged with second-degree murder (sentenced to 270 months), third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter under Minnesota law. Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill set June 25, 2021 for sentencing.

Chauvin gets a 20 year federal sentence
Derek Chauvin is already serving a 22.5 year state prison sentence for the on-duty murder of Mr Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man in Minneapolis. This murder was committed on a city street in front of children and adults.
“George’s life matters,” Mr Floyd’s brother, Philonese, said in court on Thursday, July 7, 2022 as he asked the judge to impose the maximum sentence of 25 years.
Chauvin was convicted of violating Floyd’s civil rights and he received 20 years. With this 20 year sentence, Derek Chauvin will now be moved to a federal prison. The two sentences will run concurrently with the already 22.5 year sentence for the murder of George Floyd. His sentence is due to be followed by five years of supervised release.
What happened to George Floyd?
As a 19 year veteran police officer, Chauvin held his knee on the neck of handcuffed behind his back – George Floyd for 9 minutes and 29 seconds. Bystanders, including children, kept shouting for Chauvin to “let him breathe” to no avail. A 9 year old girl said, “We need to call the police on the police”.
Chauvin violated Floyd’s civil rights
George Floyd repeatedly shouted, “I can’t breathe” over again, “I can’t breathe” to no avail. A Minneapolis EMT, trained to save lives, shouted “Let me check his pulse”. Chauvin pulled out his pepper spray and threatened to spray her if she did not step back – was an “aggravating factor”.

As a police officer, Derek Chauvin should have heeded Floyd’s call for help and rendered medical aid to help George Floyd live. Floyd knew he was going to die from the actions of Derek Chauvin and the inaction of life-saving medical help by the other three police officers on scene.
So he called on his diseased mother for help because he wanted to live. Chauvin betrayed his oath to protect and serve. George Floyd and “now he’s paying the price” as one eyewitness said. “Justice, the Queen of Virtues came calling”.
