ST. PAUL, Minn. (AGN.News) – On May 25, 2020, J. Alexander Kueng and Tao Thao were involved in the death of George Floyd. Both were convicted of violating George Floyd’s civil rights while acting under government authority.
J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao sentenced
J. Alexander Kueng was sentenced to three years (3) and Tou Thao was sentenced to three and one half years (3 1/2 years) in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson for violating George Floyd’s rights guaranteed to him and every citizen in the United States Constitution. Upon their release, both are required to complete two (2) years of supervised release.
What did the officers do?
In February 2021, they were found guilty by a jury in federal court on two counts of violating Floyd’s civil rights. The jury found they deprived Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man in Minneapolis, of his right to medical care as he was being murdered on a city street by former officer Derek Chauvin.
Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd’s neck for nine minutes and twenty-nine seconds which resulted in his death, on a city street in front of adults and children. Chauvin has been convicted in both state and federal court for his crimes and he has been sentenced to both state and federal prison.
In the crowd was a medical professional who was denied access to the dying man by the officers. Kueng held Floyd’s back while Officer Thomas Lane held his feet and Thao kept bystanders back as the crowd recorded the murder on cellphones.
Federal and state charges
The federal government brought these charges in May 2021 after Chauvin was convicted of murder and manslaughter in state court.
Kueng, who is Black, was sentenced to three (3) years on each count to be served concurrently. Thao was sentenced to three and a half years in federal prison.
On July 21, 2022, Lane was sentenced to two and a half years for his role in the violation of Floyd’s civil rights. He has pleaded guilty on state charges with his next appearance in court in September 2022.
Kueng and Thao still face state charges of aiding and abetting second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in an upcoming trial in late October 2022.
Chauvin gets a 20 year federal sentence
Chauvin was convicted of violating Floyd’s civil rights and he received 20 years. With this 20 year sentence, Derek Chauvin will now be moved to a federal prison. The two sentences will run concurrently with the already 22.5 year sentence for the murder of George Floyd. His sentence is due to be followed by five years of supervised release.
Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill after hearing victim impact statements, prosecution statement, and defense statements, sentenced former Minneapolis Officer Derek Chauvin to 22 and a half years (270 months) in the murder of George Floyd.
Derek Chauvin is already serving a 22.5 year state prison sentence for the on-duty murder of Mr Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man in Minneapolis. This murder was committed on a city street in front of children and adults.
“George’s life matters,” Mr Floyd’s brother, Philonese, said in court on Thursday, July 7, 2022 as he asked the judge to impose the maximum sentence of 25 years.
With this 20 year sentence, Derek Chauvin will now be moved to a federal prison. The two sentences will run concurrently with the already 22.5 year sentence for the murder of George Floyd. His sentence is due to be followed by five years of supervised release.
