MINNEAPOLIS (AGN.News) – The murder of George Floyd By Minneapolis police on May 25, 2020 was one year ago on Memorial Day.
George Floyd died after a white police officer, Derek Chauvin, knelt on his neck for nine minutes and twenty-nine seconds while George Floyd was handcuffed while lying face down on the street. This murder was not in some back alley. It was on a well-traveled street in broad daylight, in front of many witnesses including children.
Two other officers further restrained Floyd and a fourth officer prevented onlookers from intervening. During the final three minutes, Floyd was motionless and had no pulse. Officers made no attempt to revive him, and Chauvin’s knee remained on his neck even as emergency medical technicians attempted to treat him. Two autopsies found Floyd’s death to be a homicide.
Former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin was found Guilty of the Murder of George Floyd on all counts. Derek Chauvin was charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter under Minnesota law.
Late in the afternoon of April 20, 2021 (3:00 pm local time) the jury announced they had a verdict. Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all counts. Millions worldwide were waiting for this decision. At 4:06 pm local time, they got the answer.
Chauvin and the three other officers involved were also charged with Federal crimes related to the death of George Floyd. Their Federal trial in United States District Court will be held later this year. The three officers charged with aiding Chauvin in the murder of George Floyd will be tried in state court next year.
For some, the rare conviction of ex-police officer Derek Chauvin in Floyd’s death has proven that the justice system works, while for others it’s simple – if all were equal under the law then George Floyd would still be alive.
Many are saying that there is no place in America for racial discrimination and violence against people of color. Racial justice should replace racial injustice and social injustice should be replaced by social justice at every level of society including law enforcement.
A popular billboard in Minneapolis was often referred to by some interviewed for this article. It says, “We’re not trying to start a race war, we’re trying to end one.”
