PHOENIX (AGN.News) – Looking back at a friends wedding in the early 2000s, I remember her saying, “Get dressed up and come over for dinner on Friday evening at 6.00 pm.”
We went over and the first thing we noticed were the many cars and trucks parked along the street. We walked into the house and low and behold the pastor said, “Let’s get started!”
The wedding was over in 15 minutes. They started cutting the cake and handing out the slices. My friends were married, just like that and it was a done deal!
Today, they’re still married and their love is flowing like Niagara Falls.
Governor Katie Hobbs takes the oath
Although Monday was a state holiday, the Arizona Constitution requires the officials’ terms must start on the first Monday of January.
This is what winners of the offices of Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, Treasurer, state Superintendent of Public Instruction, and state Mine Inspector did on Monday morning, January 2, 2023 shortly after 10:00 am and it was all over in a half hour.
Six winners took the oath
Governor Katie Hobbs took the oath of office on Monday in a brief private ceremony in the state Capital, along with newly elected Secretary of State Adrian Fontes, Attorney General Kris Mayes, Treasurer Kimberly Yee, state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne and state Mine Inspector Paul Marsh.
The top three officeholders, Hobbs, Fontes, and Mayes are Democrats and Yee, Horne, and Marsh are Republicans. As of Monday morning all winners of these offices are now officially officeholders and not candidates.
Each one of the state officeholders, beginning with Fontes, started the oath of office with family members at their side and then signed an official document proclaiming the same.
Katie Hobbs became Arizona’s 24th governor
Governor Katie Hobbs took the oath of office: “I, Kathleen Marie Hobbs, do solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution and laws of the state of Arizona, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same and defend them against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and that I will faithfully and impartially discharge the duties of the office of Governor according to the best of my ability, so help me God.”
Oath administered by members of judiciary
Governor Hobbs was sworn in by her friend and federal judge Roopali H. Desai, of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit headquartered in San Francisco, California. Robert Brutinel, chief justice of the Arizona Supreme Court, swore in the other officeholders.
Democratic ascendance in the state
Democrats hold the top three (3) offices in Arizona’s state government. For the first time in forty-eight years the top three officeholders are democrats.
Bruce Edward Babbitt was in office as a member of the Democratic Party and served as the 16th governor of Arizona from March 4, 1978 to January 5, 1987.
Public ceremony will be on Thursday
A public ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday morning on the Capitol mall at 1700 W. Washington Street, Phoenix.
Members of the general public will get to witness the ceremony and celebrate the beginning of the Hobbs administration. As Governor Hobbs said, “Let’s get to work!”
Having already been sworn-in eliminated the overt drama planned by those who may have wanted to publicly protest the results of the midterm election. Like it or not Arizona has a new governor!
As my friend’s wedding, like it or not, my friend’s wedding was a done deal. It did not matter who didn’t like the person she was marrying, no matter what they may have wanted, after she was married – it was a done deal! A deal that is still happening twenty years later with three kids in high school.
UPDATE:
The public ceremony was held this morning at the state Capital. She stressed the values she holds dear. Values that most Arizonans want addressed.
Governor Katie Hobbs pledged to work with her political rivals as she ushers in a period of divided government and Democratic ascendance in a state long dominated by Republicans.
She appealed to all elected officials in Arizona to reject conspiracy theories that were promoted by Republican candidates who lost their elections on November 8, 2022, declaring “now is the perfect time to move past division and partisanship.”
Governor Hobbs made an additional appeal all elected officials in Arizona. She emphatically added, “Let me say unequivocally to every elected official here today, that if you’re ready to make real progress on the issues that matter most to the people of this state, then my door will always be open.”
Hobbs added. “Let me also say just as clearly, that chasing conspiracy theories, pushing agendas for special interests, attacking the rights of your fellow Arizonans, or seeking to further undermine our democracy will lead nowhere.”
She continued by emphasizing the issues that matter most to Arizonans, water security, border security, health care access, housing affordability, workforce development and education for individuals and families.
“We must find common ground and do what’s right,” the governor said. “It’s time to invest in public schools, defend abortion rights, safeguard elections” and “hold Washington accountable for our broken immigration system and its devastating impact on families and communities.”
