WASHINGTON (AGN.News) – Mothers and motherhood has been celebrated for centuries. However, having a special day being set aside to bring a depth of respect and honor to motherhood has long been an elusive goal for people around the world.
Today, national populations in over 40 countries have set aside a special day in March or May every year to elevate honor due mothers and motherhood. In the United States, May 14, 2023, is Mother’s Day 2023.
Mother’s Day in the United States
On May 10, 1908, Anna Jarvis, after losing her own mother, felt compelled to honor her mother and all the other mothers in America with a special day that became the first official Mother’s Day in America.
Then, as now, special religious services are held in various places of worship. Mother’s Day dinners, gift giving, flowers, Mother’s Day cards, and attending church services are associated with this special day.
Mother’s Day generally precedes Father’s Day which comes in June. Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May each year.
Another interesting fact about Mother’s Day is a singular possessive, meaning each family will honor their own mother on this day. It is not a plural possessive commemorating all mothers in the country or the world.
Mother’s Day honors will be commemorated today, throughout the day, by individuals and families around the world.
