WASHINGTON (AGN.News) – One of the most duplicated documents in the entire world is the Constitution of the United States. It forms the foundation of many of the constitutions governing some of the world’s thriving economies.
To become part of the Constitution which went into operation on March 4, 1789, an amendment must be ratified by three-fourths of the states as directed by Congress.
The 27 Ratified Amendments
1st Amendment – Completed on December 15, 1791: Protects freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly and the right to petition the government.
2nd Amendment – Completed on December 15, 1791: Protects the right to keep and bear arms.
3rd Amendment – Completed on December 15, 1791: Restricts the quartering of soldiers in private homes.
4th Amendment – Completed on December 15, 1791: Prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures and sets out requirements for search warrants based on probable cause.
5th Amendment – Completed on December 15, 1791: Sets out rules for indictment by grand jury and eminent domain, protects the right to due process, and prohibits self-incrimination and double jeopardy.
6th Amendment – Completed on December 15, 1791: Protects the right to a speedy trial by jury, to notification of criminal accusations, to confront the accuser, to obtain witnesses and retain counsel.
7th Amendment – Completed on December 15, 1791: Provides for a jury trial in civil lawsuits.
8th Amendment – Completed on December 15, 1791: Prohibits excess fines and excessive bail, as well as cruel and unusual punishment.
9th Amendment – Completed on December 15, 1791: States that the rights not enumerated in the Constitution are retained by the people.
10th Amendment – Completed on December 15, 1791: States that the federal government possesses only those powers delegated, or enumerated, to it through the Constitution, and that all other powers are reserved to the states, or the people.
11th Amendment – Completed on February 7, 1795: Make states immune from suits from out-of-state citizens and foreigners not living within the state borders, lays the foundation for state sovereign immunity.
12th Amendment – Completed on June 15, 1804: Revises presidential election procedures by having the president and vice president elected together as opposed to the vice president being the runner up in the presidential election.
13th Amendment – Completed on December 6, 1865: Abolishes slavery and involuntary servitute, except as punishment for a crime.
14th Amendment – Completed on July 9, 1868: Defines citizenship, contains the Privileges or immunities Clause, the Due Process Clause, and the Equal Protection Clause, and deals with post-Civil War issues.
15th Amendment – Completed on February 3, 1870: Prohibits the denial of the right to vote based on race, color or previous condition of servitude.
16th Amendment – Completed on February 3, 1913: Permits Congress to levy an income tax without apportioning in among the various states or basing it on the United States Census.
17th Amendment – Completed on April 8, 1913: Establishes the direct election of United States senators by popular vote.
18th Amendment – Completed on January 16, 1919: Prohibited the manufacturing of alcohol within the United states. (Repealed December 5, 1933, via the 21st Amendment)
19th Amendment – Completed on August 18, 1920: Prohibits the denial of the right to vote based on sex.
20th Amendment – Completed on January 23, 1933: Changes the dates on which the terms of the president and vice president, and of members of Congress, begin and end, to January 20 and January 3 respectfully. States that if the president-elect dies before taking office, the vice president-elect is to be inaugurated as president.
21st Amendment – Completed on December 5, 1933: Repeals the 18th Amendment and makes it a federal offense to transport or import intoxicating liquors into U.S. states and territories where such is prohibited by law.
22nd Amendment – Completed on February 27, 1951: Limits the number of times a person can be elected president.
23rd Amendment – Completed on March 29, 1961: Grants the District of Columbia electors in the Electoral College.
24th Amendment – Completed on January 23, 1964: Prohibits the revocation of voting rights due to the non-payment of a poll tax or any other tax.
25th Amendment – Completed on February 10, 1967: Addresses succession to the presidency and establishes procedures both for filling a vacancy in the office of vice president and responding to presidential disabilities.
26th Amendment – Completed on July 1, 1971: Prohibits the denial of the right of US citizens 18 years of age or older, to vote on account of age.
27th Amendment – Completed on May 7, 1992: Delays laws affecting Congressional salary from taking effect until after the next election of representatives.
U.S. Constitution Governs and protects
Since March 4, 1789, this Constitutional Republic, known as the United States of America, has successfully been the foundation upon which generations upon generations who adhered to its contents have created a “more perfect union” where a harmonious people have stood firm against all enemies, foreign and domestic..
The 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln’s life and legacy are examples of loyalty, dedication, and support for the Constitution and the rights it allows its citizens to enjoy. He ultimately gave his life for his country as so many other Americans over the past 235 years.
