ROSEWOOD, Florida (AGN.News) – Rosewood is an unincorporated community in Levy County, Florida, located just off State Road 24 approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) northeast of Sumner and 9 miles (14 km) northeast of Cedar Key. An African American community prospered there in the early 20th century, until a white mob destroyed it in the 1923 Rosewood massacre.
Since the 1950s, several businesses were established in Rosewood, including a general store; fisheries; charter tours; clam, oysters and other types of Mollusca farmers; agricultural farms; restaurants; storage facilities and a small airfield. Several neighborhoods have been developed around these businesses.
Rosewood will heal its wounds
When you drive past the Rosewood of today on your way to the Gulf of Mexico less than 10 miles down the road going west on State Road 24, you can see a community of residents who are optimistic about the future of their rural community.
If you are traveling on Interstate 75 in the Gainesville, Florida area, look for the State Road 24 exit, proceed west and you will see Rosewood and a marker on the side of the road commemorating the events of 1923.
In 1995 survivor Robie Mortin recalled at age 79, “Rosewood was a town where everyone’s house was painted. There were roses everywhere you walked. Lovely.”
Today, the descendants of the survivors of the massacre of January 1-7, 1923 are working hard to keep the memory of those days fresh in the history of America’s growth. As a growing and prosperous nation, Americans have learned many important lessons. History, when respected, can be a platform upon which the next generation can produce a better community of cities and neighborhoods.
