WASHINGTON (AGN.News) -The 2024 United States Presidential and general election takes place on Tuesday, November 5th. If you are an eligible voter, you can let your voice be heard loud and clear by voting. Vote By Mail or In-Person at your designated location.
Every community in the country will cast their vote for the candidate of their choice. It’s your right to vote! The right to vote is guaranteed under laws well established and confirmed in the 15th Amendment of the United States Constitution.
Five reasons why you should vote
According to The Southern Poverty Law Center voting is a key element of civic engagement and a critical part of the democratic process. As the late civil rights icon and U.S. Rep. John Lewis said, “The vote is precious. It is almost sacred. It is the most powerful nonviolent tool we have in a democracy.”
1. In a democracy, you get a say in things that are important to you. The policies shaped by elected officials affect your life. Your vote holds elected officials accountable for their actions. It forces them to listen to you and the issues that most concern you. Your vote is your report card on lawmakers. If you’re not content with the job an elected official has done, you can use your vote to remove that official from office.
2. The policies shaped by elected officials affect your life. While federal elections typically have the largest voter turnouts, voting in your state and local elections is just as important. What happens in your town, city and state will affect your everyday life. Laws at the local level affect taxes, health and public safety, education, recreation, economic development and more. States regulate issues like health care and tenants’ rights. They determine how long children stay in school, manage infrastructure, spur job creation and do much more.
3. You pay taxes. Your vote gives power to the people who will spend your tax money. Help ensure that money is used in a responsible and efficient way by voting.
4. Rights are not necessarily guaranteed. Voting is one of the many privileges of living in a democratic society. While every American citizen has the right to vote today, we are seeing attacks on voting equity, including gerrymandering, voting restrictions, misinformation and election intimidation. Voting is a critical right we must protect, and that begins by exercising our right to vote in elections at every level of government.
5. You matter. Young voters bring diverse points of view on issues affecting their generation. Engaging in the process early will help make it a habit throughout your life, providing you with the opportunity to shape the future.
2024 Local, State, and Federal Elections
All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and many of the 100 seats in the United States Senate will be contested in this election.
Also, many state and territorial gubernatorial elections, as well as numerous other state and local elections, will be contested.
Are you qualified to vote?
After the 2020 census many states exercised their right to participate in congressional redistricting due to shifting populations or an increase in population as reflected in the census.
There have been many changes in state-level and territorial election laws. Therefore, everyone is urged to check their status and/or qualifications to vote and to make sure you are eligible to vote in 2024. Contact your local election office for more information.
For example, some states require all voters to register to vote for every general election. Some states require everyone who wants to vote-by-mail to register again for the 2024 election. Some states have restricted vote-by-mail. Drop box locations may or may not be available.
The only way to make sure you’re eligible to vote in the 2024 election and confirm where to go to cast your vote is to contact your local election office. Also, you may go to VOTE.gov for more information.
The results of this election will impact United States Congress, state houses, local mayors, ballot initiatives, and bond issues. This will be the first election since the mid-terms in 2022 in most of the country. Many U.S. states will have candidates who will seek local elected offices.
Gubernatorial elections, Attorney General elections, Secretary of State elections, and State Treasurer elections, state judicial elections and more in many states will take place on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Let your voice be heard by voting!
Additionally, local county and city elections will have women and men who will be seeking elected office. You will have an opportunity to select the candidate of your choice for a particular office this November and the 2024 General Election.
Let your voice be heard!
Throughout the history of the country elections have had a critical role to play in the governance of the nation. Never before has an election been more important than the coming elections.
