WASHINGTON (AGN.News) – The United States of America is a nation of leaders who fully support EARTH DAY AROUND THE WORLD.
Earth Day 2023 has as its theme “Invest in Our Planet”. This is a shared responsibility for everyone who has an interest in creating a better living environment for the next generation.
The Founding Fathers of America knew it would not be an easy task to unify a population from so many places on Earth, with so many customs, and backgrounds to focus on the one single challenge facing the country. If there was a need to focus it’s climate change.
What is this annual EARTH DAY?
Earth Day 2023 is an annual event held worldwide this year on April 22, 2023 to demonstrate global support for environmental protection. It was first celebrated on April 22, 1970.
Today, it involves a wide range of events coordinated globally by EARTHDAY.ORG. One in eight people around (or one billion people) the world are participating in various Earth Day events in 193 countries around the world.
The official theme of this Earth Day is Invest in Our Planet. Each person can participate in any way they can to show their unyielding support for this greatest of environmental causes.
April 22, 1970 is a day to remember
On April 22, 1970 was the first Earth Day event. Earth Day was founded by Gaylord Nelson and celebrated around the United States by over 20 million people. Twenty million people poured into the streets to celebrate.
This Earth Day event remains the largest single-day protest in human history. People, companies, and labor organizations contributed financially and organizationally joined in to make this a memorable 1970 event.
On Earth Day 2016, the landmark Paris Agreement was signed by the United States, the United Kingdom, and 120 other countries.
On Earth Day 2020, over 100 million people around the world observed the 50th anniversary in what is being referred to as the largest online mass mobilization in history.
Climate Change in 2023 is a real challenge
The United Nations says, “Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. Such shifts can be natural, due to changes in the sun’s activity or large volcanic eruptions.”
“But since the 1800s, human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas.”
“Burning fossil fuels (A fossil fuel is a hydrocarbon-containing material such as coal, oil, and natural gas) generates greenhouse gas emissions that act like a blanket wrapped around the Earth, trapping the sun’s heat and raising temperatures.”
“The main greenhouse gases that are causing climate change include carbon dioxide and methane. These come from using gasoline for driving a car or coal for heating a building, for example. Clearing land and cutting down forests can also release carbon dioxide.”
“Agriculture, oil and gas operations are major sources of methane emissions. Energy, industry, transport, buildings, agriculture and land use are among the main sectors causing greenhouse gases.”
The need for positive and emergency action on Climate Change is NOW! Life on earth as we know is about to dramatically change for future generations.
Earth Day 2023 is a mind-blowing reminder of the need for global governments to take action to mitigate damaging changes to the environment.
Advocates for immediate action are calling on world leaders to re-commit to the Paris Agreement which established goals that could guide nations in mitigating these environmental changes.
President Biden signs environmental order
On Friday, April 21, 2023, is a day to remember. President Joe Biden signed an executive order directing all federal agencies to make it their “mission” to work towards “environmental justice for all.”
The president wants all “to embed environmental justice into the work of federal agencies, bring clean energy and healthy environments to all, and recognize, undo, and mitigate harm to those who have suffered from toxic pollution and other environmental burdens like climate change.”
This order says to “fulfill our Nation’s promises of justice, liberty, and equality, every person must have clean air to breathe, clean water to drink; safe and healthy foods to eat; and an environment that is healthy, sustainable, climate-resilient, and free from harmful pollution and chemical exposure.”
“Restoring and protecting a healthy environment – wherever people live, play, work, learn, grow, and worship – is a matter of justice and a fundamental duty that the Federal Government must uphold on behalf of all people.”
White House and environmental issues
This order creates a White House of Environmental Justice. What is environmental justice?
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines environmental justice as “the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies.”
There are many overburdened communities across the country that are directly harmed by toxic pollution and other environmental injustice issues. The White House claims “racism is a fundamental driver of environmental injustice.”
These environmental injustices are made worst with underdevelopment and under investment in local infrastructure and local critical services “due to a legacy of racial discrimination.”
President Biden takes action on environment
The Executive Order is designed to address these causes and to better protect local communities against the harm caused by past inequity and under spending to resolve and implement better-practices going forward.
In 2023, the Federal Government plans to assist 7.5 million Americans to transition to solar panels to provide clean energy for their homes. This will help de-carbonize power grids in the coming years.
Since this is Earth Day 2023, millions around the world will witness a very passionate people who are serious about the various issues brought on by climate change and man-made neglect of the environment.
EARTH DAY 2023 will be a day to remember for all people who’re concerned about a cleaner and more-efficient environment for the next generation.
