WASHINGTON (AGN.News) – The Alphabet Company is committed to helping local communities grow their Gross Local Product (GLP). The GLP represents the monetary measure of the total market value of all the final goods and services produced and rendered in a specific time period by a specific community. It’s the local equivalent of GDP.

What is GDP? Gross domestic product (GDP) is a monetary measure of the total market value of all the final goods and services produced and rendered in a specific time period by a country or countries. GDP is often used to measure the economic performance of a country or region.

Gross Local Product within communities

When considering LDP within a given community something traditionally is not included. That’s unpaid labor or unpaid work. This is defined as labor or work that does not receive any direct remuneration. This is a form of non-market work which can fall into one of two categories: (1) unpaid work that is placed within the production boundary of the System of National Accounts (SNA), such as gross domestic product (GDP); and (2) unpaid work that falls outside of the production boundary (non-SNA work), such as domestic labor that occurs inside households for their consumption.

The production boundary is the name given by economists to the imaginary line between unpaid work, which is not counted directly in the gross domestic product, and paid work that the GDP does count.

The same applies to GLP. There are invisible lines between unpaid and paid work that is counted by economists in GDP. We want to erase the line so that more credit is given to those who make possible the measure the economic performance in a given community.

Unpaid labor is visible in many forms and is not limited to activities within a household. Other types of unpaid labor activities include volunteering as a form of charity work and interning as a form of unpaid employment.

In a lot of countries, unpaid domestic work in the household is typically performed by women, due to gender inequality and gender norms, which can result in high-stress levels in women attempting to balance unpaid work and paid employment. In poorer countries, this work is sometimes performed by children. – Wikipedia

Inequality and Gender Discrimination

These two factors minimize the value of women and marginalized community members as vital to the Local Domestic Product. Many of these individuals produce vital work within the community but are often overlooked for various reasons. The work performed by these groups increases the production of GLP which increases the value of these individuals to the local economy.

Many volunteers support the community as workers who’re not compensated for their effort. Nonetheless, they are important to the Local Domestic Product. Many of the volunteers work in food banks, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, sporting events, unpaid domestic work and so on.

Novelnomics Support Local Domestic Product

When we created Novelnomics as a vital part of our economic development program, we included paid and unpaid workers who are vital to the Local Domestic Product within a community.

Our economists looked at small cities and communities in rural areas and concluded they should be a part of the statistics the gauge the activities that are part of the local economy. The specifics of this calculus will be revealed at a future public event.
